Avoid a Government Shutdown
The government will soon run out of funding.
Back in September, the U.S. Senate voted 78-18 to pass a bipartisan continuing resolution (CR) to extend federal spending and avert a government shutdown through December 20, 2024. The U.S. House passed the measure unanimously by voice vote.
But funding for the U.S. government ends on December 20—unless Congress acts to extend funding into 2025. Democrats and Republicans appear willing to pass another continuing resolution that would temporarily fund the government into early 2025. But the two parties haven't even agreed on an overall spending level for the new fiscal year, let alone how to allocate the money across parts of the government.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer referred to the inevitability of a short-term bill, saying, “We need to keep divisive and unnecessary provisions out of any government funding extension, or else it will get harder to pass a CR in time.”
There are two things Congress needs to do: (1) Congress needs to fund the government into 2025, and (2) Congress needs to actually pass a budget for fiscal year 2024-2025.
